Don’t let its plain green skin fool you – ‘Old Greengage’ produces exceptionally sweet, juicy plum perfection. This European variety is renowned for its rich, honeyed flavour and tender melting flesh. The small round fruits lack visual appeal but their superb sugary taste has earned accolades from the RHS as one of the best flavoured plums. Though the crop may not be prolific, each harvest in mid-August brings a bounty of plums that prioritises taste over appearance. Supplied grafted to the reliable and semi-vigorous St Julien A rootstock.
Garden care:
Pollination Information: Although partially self-fertile, this gage will have a higher yield when planted with another nearby in pollination group 3, such as ‘Oullins Gage’.
Bare-root plants should be planted out as soon as they arrive. If this is not possible, they can be heeled in temporarily (covering their roots with soil) or potted up. Before planting, soak the rootball in a bucket of water for half an hour and make sure to incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole. Stake firmly in exposed positions and prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker.
